Stainless Steel Round Pipe (CHS)

Hollow sections/pipes are used for a variety of purposes. They are produced by two distinct methods which result in either a welded or seamless pipe.

304 Stainless Steel Pipes

Grade 304 stainless steel is one of the most used stainless steel grades for tubing and piping applications. Grade 304 stainless steel has excellent chemical and corrosion resistance, however it is not suitable for applications involving temperatures between 800 and 1640 degrees Fahrenheit (F) due to carbide precipitation. Because of its lower carbon content limit, Grade 304L stainless steel pipe does not have this problem, making it acceptable for welding and higher temperature applications. Other varieties of stainless steel, such as nickel or molybdenum, typically have additions that strengthen qualities that are desirable in specific applications.

316 Stainless Steel Pipes

Grade 316 stainless steel pipes, comprised of about 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, and 2-3% molybdenum, with a maximum of 0.08% carbon, are the materials of choice for demanding applications in Singapore’s maritime industry, chemical transport, and high-saline environments like coastal architectural projects. The low carbon variant, 316L, is particularly suited for welded constructions within the city’s urban landscape due to its reduced carbon content that eliminates carbide precipitation risks. These stainless steel pipes are also widely used in the food processing industry, pharmaceutical production, and medical equipment manufacturing, where their excellent corrosion resistance is essential for maintaining hygiene and preventing contamination.

Frequently Asked Questions about Stainless Steel Pipe

Common types include seamless pipes, welded pipes, round pipes, and square or rectangular tubes, typically in grades 304 and 316 for general and marine applications.

Yes, stainless steel pipes are widely used in plumbing systems for their durability, hygiene, and resistance to corrosion, especially in HDB and commercial buildings.

Absolutely. Stainless steel pipes—especially in grade 316—are well-suited for Singapore’s tropical climate, offering excellent resistance to rain, humidity, and heat.
